Following the Ofsted inspection of saltash.net community school’s PE department in June 2010, staff and students were delighted to receive an Outstanding judgement. saltash.net prides itself on its caring ethos and strong sense of community spirit which is not just focused within school but reaches outwards from a local to an international level. This desire for achievement for all has led to partnerships on a global scale and the most recent international link being one developed with a Nigerian school through partnership with the British Council and the Youth Sports Trust. Opportunities for students at saltash.net to be creative and to achieve their full potential are numerous.

Comments made by the Ofsted Inspector, whilst specific to the PE department, reflect the spirit of the school as a whole.

  • “The extra-curricular and enrichment programmes are extensive”
  • “The Theme Day enabled boys and girls to make exceptional progress in their creative work, communication and teamwork”
  • “Staff know individual students extremely well and do everything possible to meet their needs and aspirations.”
  • “Teaching inspires students to want to be the best they can.”
  • “Outstanding relationships exist between students and staff.”

saltash.net community school’s Special Needs Department was presented with a cheque for £1100 raised by ex-student Del Phillips, Warehouse Manager at Appleby Westward Group Ltd. Mr Phillips was keen to help the school’s special needs department and so undertook half marathons in Tavistock, Saltash and Plymouth and raised significant sponsorship contributions from local businesses such as Appleby Westward £250, Linde Severnside £250, Drew and Co £25 and the Petit Pain coffee shop in Saltash, who raised about £100 in customer sponsors. Family and friends also helped add to the total, which will be spent on a computer, complete with colour printer and software specifically for students with Special Needs. Fiona Taylor, Head of Special Needs, said “We are absolutely delighted with the donation. I know how much hard work can be involved in trying to obtain sponsorship and we are very grateful to Mr Phillips for all his efforts. This will really make a difference to the students within my department.”

Students have had a fantastic time this year with a huge range of activities on offer for Curriculum Enrichment Week. They have been able to choose from things such as dance, music, cooking, surfing, Plymouth Pavilions, camping, horse-riding, day trips to local attractions, trips abroad to Holland and Austria to name but a few! The weather has been kind to those involved in outdoor activities and the memories for all are certain to last a long time.

This is an international collaborative project where students from different schools from different countries pick a country that is represented in the World Cup and they create a multimedia presentation about that country working in a small group. We set this up at our school and advertised for schools globally to get involved and take part.

The main Learning Objectives were:

What do you need to be an effective global learner in the 21st century? Understand what you need to be an effective 21st century learner? Demonstrate what good communication looks like? Gain an understanding of different countries and cultures

On July 1st we broadcast live from our main hall on twitcam with an audience of 250 students here at saltash.net school the student presentations about the world cup. We had over 2000 students taking part globally, from 11 different countries and probably over 50 schools worldwide. In addition we broadcast live over the internet and so potentially had an even bigger audience and some of the audience even asked the students questions.

You can see the archived broadcast here:

There were some absolutely fantastic presentations and students really enjoyed being part of the video conference and the project itself.

Some of the comments posted were brilliant here are some of the ones that were sent through:

“The work produced by all the students that we saw was of an extremely high standard. These students have inspired my students to be more creative” Teacher in USA

“It was a fantastic event and excellent to see such engaged and enthusiastic learners who want to learn more about the world around us”
