Another 8 rescue hens arrived at Saltash on Friday (20th). They looked a bit bewildered at first but soon settled into foraging and exploring their new home. They look very scrawny and scruffy compared to our resident hens but give them a few weeks and you will hardly be able to tell the difference. On Saturday Alice the Cornish Black pig came back to stay with us. She was accompanied by her friend and companion, Boris. Boris was born here back in September and seems very happy to be back.

On Friday the 28th of March Dot the school pig gave birth to six healthy piglets. Four gilts, (females) and two boars. Labour started at about 5 o’clock in the morning and it was all over by mid-day.

She was ably attended during the birth by our own animal technician, Julie Priest and her assistant, Andy Moir.

In the euphoria of the occasion, Andy penned a few immortal lines:

There once was a sow called Dot
Who usually grunted a lot.
One day she woke up, feeling pretty wound up,
And popped out six piglets to sup.
